Our Shared Journey

It is not enough to say that humans are a part of the universe; We are, unmistakably, a driving force in what happens to that universe. The more we know about our connectedness to other organisms—and even galaxies—and our role in their continuation and ability to thrive, the greater our responsibility. That’s the premise behind Journey of the Universe, a new documentary that sets out to explain how advanced scientific understanding of our creation and evolution through mathematics, science and technology over the past two centuries has changed our very relationship to the planet.

Scott Sampson is a Canadian paleontologist and science communicator who lives in Marin County, California. He is the on-air host of the PBS children’s series Dinosaur Train, and author of Dinosaur Odyssey: Fossil Threads in the Web of Life. Last month, he participated in a panel discussion at Yale University about Journey of the Universe, a new film, accompanied by a book, that celebrates the sweeping story of life from the Big Bang to today. We asked Scott four questions about the cultural importance of the universe story, and the central role it might play in children’s nature literacy. The film opens on Saturday in San Francisco.

Tom Lovejoy became the first recipient of the Heinz Center Biodiversity Chair in August 2008. Before coming to The Heinz Center, he was the chief biodiversity advisor to the World Bank, science advisor to the secretary of the interior, and executive vice president of the World Wildlife Fund. I imagine that a number of 13.7 readers have at one time or another watched (some of) the 13-hour Cosmos series with Carl Sagan, released in 1980.

Last weekend I went to the first public screening of Journey of the Universe, a one-hour movie directed and produced by the co-director of the Cosmos series David Kennard.

“Journey of the Universe,” a documentary film that draws together scientific discoveries in astronomy, biodiversity, biology, ecology and geology with humanistic insights concerning the nature of the universe, will premiere at a conference on the same topic from March 24 to 27 in Kroon Hall. The film, produced by Mary Evelyn Tucker, a co-director of the Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology, is designed not only to show humanity’s wondrous connection to the cosmos but also to inspire people to form a new and closer relationship with our planet during a period of environmental and social crisis.
